Wildfires have become a regular feature of the western U.S. landscape, one we have grown accustomed to. They have gone from burning remote areas that have little impact on the lives of those in states like California, Oregon, or New Mexico, decimating areas with higher population sizes. The impact of these massive fires can be seen and felt as far east as New York City as the Dixie Fire smoke from this summer contributed to the lowest air quality rating in the city since 2006. There are a multitude of statistics that show that an unprecedented scope has become common place. Three out of the last six years (and soon to be four out seven) has seen a total of 10M acres burned after never reaching that level before 2015. Of the top ten costliest fires of all time, eight have been recorded from 2017 – 2020, with the Dixie Fire in California, and Bootleg Fire in Oregon sure to join the list when updated with 2021 fires.

Michael Lilien
Mr. Lilien’s has worked as a forensic engineer, managing projects as varied as home and vehicle fires to product testing, evaluation, and investigation. Mr. Lilien has spent considerable time at electric utilities working in construction project management, field and distribution operations, standards writing and design review. While in manufacturing Mr. Lilien led engineering teams, done considerable troubleshooting and forensic work of product and testing issues, and product research, development and design. Most recently prior to EFI Global Mr. Lilien has acted as an electrical engineering consultant for DEMSI, Inc. in a mediation case for the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) in New Orleans, LA.
