Learning Objectives: At the end of this lesson, the attendee should be able to: Identify and interpret the types of physical, biological, and toxic hazards present at post-fire scenes Describe the effects of ventilation on the structural post-fire scene Explain the relevant fire investigation health hazard research studies Identify the proper types of safety and respiratory PPE that fire investigators should use Jeff Pauley IAAI-CFI, CFEI, MIFireE, IAAI Health and Safety Committee chairman Jeff is a retired Maryland police sergeant and has been a fire investigator since 2010. He was the deputy fire marshal for the Bedford County (VA) Fire & Rescue for five years and the battalion chief/fire marshal there for two and a half years. He is now employed by EFI Global, Inc. as a fire investigator. Mr. Pauley has been a member of the IAAI Health and Safety Committee since it was re-established in 2016 and is the principal author of the 2016 Benchmark Survey and the committee’s 2018 white paper “Fire Investigator Health and Safety Best Practices.”

  • Jeff Pauley

    Jeff Pauley is a corporate post-fire scene health and safety consultant, a fire investigator with EFI Global, Inc., and the former fire marshal for Bedford County, Virginia. He is the IAAI Health & Safety Committee chairman and represents the IAAI on the Oversight and Planning Board of the federally funded Fire Fighter Cancer Cohort Study’s Fire Investigator Expansion Study. Jeff is on the technical advisory panels for the UL Firefighter Safety Research Institute’s post-fire environment research project and the AFG-funded North Carolina State University/Fire Protection Research Foundation research project looking at the effectiveness of fire investigator clothing ensembles and decon wipes. Jeff holds many Virginia and North Carolina fire service certifications and is an IAAI certified fire investigator and certified instructor. He has a BS in management studies and a master’s degree in occupational safety and health. Jeff has been researching, writing about, and presenting on fire investigator health and safety since 2013.
